Free Credit Report

If you are looking to get a copy of your credit report, avoid those little advertisements that you see all over the Internet offering a free copy. They almost always have some sort of catch, like a trial for a credit monitoring service that, if you forget to cancel, will cost you upwards of $30 a month and not help you at all.

Besides, there is no need to go through a random company when you can get your credit report for free from one of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian. You see, President Bush and Congress passed the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) in December of 2003. FACTA allows every American to get one free copy of their credit report from each of the three credit bureaus once every twelve months. That means that, if you stagger your requests, you can review you credit report once every four months for free!

FACTA is already in effect in the Western and Midwestern United States. Those living in the Southern states can take part as of June 1, 2005, while those in the Eastern United States will have to wait until September 1.
